The Days Of The Network Hub

Networking hubs are pretty old devices that are also pretty basic. Most people know them for their networking capabilities for computers. Many people aren’t familiar with a network hub because of the advancements and replacements in technology.

A hub is a box like structure with many ports, similar to Ethernet ports. The ports are there for computer cables to hook in giving that computer access to the network. Some hubs have just a few ports while others can have more than 40.

The network that is created with a hub is known as a Local Area Network, or LAN. The LAN creates the ability to share all files from the computers. They are sent through the hub as packets of information and these packets are then forwarded to all computers on the network.

Connecting to your network hub is actually not very hard. You will need basic computer cables that are long enough to extend from your computer to the hub. Once all the computers are connected properly to the hub you will have your own LAN.

Hubs were and still are used for many things. Many businesses use them as do schools. Another popular reason hubs are used is to set up a gaming network to play games together.

One reason hubs seem to be fading out is because they lack the ability to access the internet on their own. If you want your computer network to be online, you will need an Ethernet port whether it’s from a router or a network adaptor. Ethernet ports will link the internet to your LAN but require additional installation.

Unfortunately, a hub does not work without flaw. A huge downside to having a hub is the traffic slowdown that occurs fairly often. A hub doesn’t manage the traffic coming through it so when there is too much traffic the computers slow down to a crawl.

Hubs are fairly basic devices for networking computers. They are slowly being weeded out as switches and other alternatives are made available. Hubs have laid the foundation for advancements in the world of computer networking.
